Our Story

Founded in 1976 by Ron and Barbara Rhodes, the store began in a small building on North Rouse Street. What started as a modest, hard-working neighborhood grocery has grown into a trusted institution in Southeast Kansas.

“When we opened in 1976, there were a lot of independent grocery stores. There aren’t many of us left,” said Ron Rhodes. “Our ability to stay open for 50 years is entirely because of our loyal customers and dedicated staff. Without strong community support, we wouldn’t be in business today.”

Today, Ron’s Supermarket operates at 310 E. Centennial Drive in Pittsburg, with a second store, Rhodes Family Price Chopper, located in Branson, Missouri. Leadership transitioned in 2023 when Ron retired and his sons, Drew and Tim Rhodes, assumed ownership.

“Turning 50 represents hard work and loyalty,” said Drew Rhodes. “My parents worked through good times and tough times to keep the business moving forward, and our community has been loyal to their local grocery store in return. That’s something we don’t take lightly.”

A Legacy of Service

Over the years, Ron’s transitioned from floral, video rental, and even a Jock’s Nitch Sporting Goods shop to a modern mix of fresh foods and specialty departments. Today, customers enjoy fresh produce, premium meats and seafood, scratch-made deli meals, fresh bakery items, local and specialty products, freshly made sushi, a full-service salad bar, and PittCafe serving Signet Coffee.

Despite growth and modernization, Ron’s remains committed to the same principles it was founded on: clean stores, friendly service, fair pricing, and treating customers, vendors, and employees with respect.

Community Partnerships

Ron’s maintains long-standing relationships with schools, nonprofits, food programs, and small businesses throughout Southeast Kansas. The company is also the Official Grocer of Pittsburg State Athletics, supporting Gorilla student athletes, coaches, and fans.

“A strong community is built on strong local businesses, schools, and partnerships,” said Ron Rhodes. “We live here, our kids went to school here, and this is our home. Giving back and staying involved has always been important to us.”

Looking Ahead

As Ron’s celebrates its 50th Anniversary, the company remains focused on serving Pittsburg and Branson with innovation, customer-focused improvements, and a commitment to being the region’s trusted hometown grocer.

“There are things we can offer customers that they just can’t get at a big-box store,” said Drew Rhodes. “We’ll continue to grow, innovate, and invest, but we’ll always keep the local, family-owned personal touch. We’re here because this is home, and because our customers deserve better.”
